AKD Process

PLANTATION & FOREST MANAGEMENT
AKD own and actively manage over 9,000 hectares of Radiata Pine plantations. The rest of our log supply is sourced from other plantations within Australia. We employ intensive management regimes to deliver quality products and to ensure sustainable forest management.
LOG SORTING SEPARATION & GRADING
Our state-of-the-art log classification process utilises two and three dimensional scanning technology for diameter sorting and to ascertain fibre characteristics, matching logs to their ideal end use and product application.
GREEN MILL PROCESSING
AKD operates Six sawmills that utilise state of the art processing facilities, including scanning devices that determine maximum yield and board recovery from our timber. 3D, gamma ray and acoustic scanning devices are employed to assess log rotation, grading of timber, board density and fibre stiffness – which are essential to determining a products end use.
KILN DRYING
The kiln drying of timber involves the careful control of both air temperature and humidity to ensure air circulates in a particular manner preventing excess shrinkage or swelling. This process help to create an end product that is easier to paint, glue, nail, screw and machine. In addition, dry wood is lighter (reducing the cost of transport) and insulates better with a higher electricity resistance.
DRY MILL PROCESSING, TIMBER DRESSING & GRADING
Our operations enable multiple products lines to be processed on the same day - a key component of “make to order” production. We utilise acoustic, visual, X-ray and bending to determine the structural characteristics of the full length of every single piece of timber.
TIMBER TREATMENT
We utilise state-of-the-art treatment processes used on our termi-blue™, ecowood-dry™ and losp-clear™ new generation products. These processes ensure the durability, protection, performance and reliability of all our products. Specific treatments are undertaken to ensure structural integrity and protection against termite attacks, decay and weather.
PRODUCT MANUFACTURING
AKD manufactures a wide range of timber products for a variety of end uses. We produce both solid and engineered wood products, kiln dried, dressed and machine graded timber for construction and decorative purposes as well as timber for the DIY market, such as decking and landscape products.
VALUE ADDED PROCESSING
AKD has a remanufacturing plant that transforms timber off cuts into high value timber products. Processes include docking, splitting, finger jointing and treating. Finished products include docked-to-length studs, pallet and bin components, flooring, linings, sleepers, exposed beams, architraves, furniture components, noggins, capping, posts, and many other structural and decorative products.
QUALITY ASSURANCE
AKD maintains a strong position within the industry. We strive to ensure that our policies and procedures are consistent with, and even exceed industry best practice. AKD has various quality assurance laboratories to test both solid wood and engineered products. We run a continuous monitoring program of all structural products as well as undertake regular third party audits. We also invest heavily in the technical skills within the business.
SALES AND MARKETING
Production plans are based on a combination of “make to order” and “make to stock” ensuring we can meet specific order requirements on time and in full. Our customers receive up-to-date information on stock availability allowing them to make informed purchasing decisions. AKD has a team of sales professionals that manage key accounts, customer expectations and monitor market trends.
